A mahogany Campaign Book Cabinet.

The bookcase has open shelves, as opposed to having a pair of doors to separate the books. There are two shelves to each sides that can be adjusted into ten different positions.

When closed, two lugs to one side of the cabinet locate the two halves of the 'box' to each other. A Nettlefold three leaver lock with a replaced key can then be used to lock the two halves together for travel. At some point, probably when the original key was lost, two swing hooks were added with one now missing.

The book cabinet is larger than a standard campaign chest and was probably intended to sit on a chest of at least 42 inches in width. It is very plain in look with tam lines cut into the top and bottom edges of each shelf the only concession to decoration.

Such bookcases are always useful and could be mounted on a wall for modern use, if not sat on a piece of furniture or used on the floor. Mid 19th Century.

The folded size has a height of 28 1/4 inches by a width of 21 and depth 15 inches.
