This is an extremely unusual and rare form of Campaign chest.

To all intents and purposes it looks simply like an Arts and Crafts piece of furniture with the peg construction a typical feature of the movement. However, once the pegs (and of course the drawers) are removed the whole carcass can be taken apart. The top, bottom and sides are all locked to each other by pegged through tenons and the folding back boards are held in place by a tongue and groove joint. The drawers also cleverly fold through a series of hinges, allowing the chest to be completely flat packed for travel.

Although not marked the quality of workmanship, along with style features such as the gallery suggest an attribution of the chest to Heals. They are noted as makers of campaign furniture (see British Campaign Furniture by Brawer) but are far more recognized for their association with the Arts and Crafts movement. Circa 1900
