King George VI God Save The King Banner
King George VI God Save The King Banner
81968
A red and white cotton Banner made for the coronation of King George VI.
The banner is made from two pieces of cloth sewn together in the middle. The British Film Institute has film of street celebrations in Newcastle for the coronation which shows a similar banner. George was crowned on the 12th of May 1937 which was the same date intended for his brother Edward VIII before his abdication. It's likely that hundreds of these banners were produced at the time but few would have been kept. They would have been hung in towns throughout the country in support of the King during an uncertain time in the world. Circa 1937.
