The top half of a mahogany Aldershot Campaign Chest.

Aldershot Chests consisted of finished mahogany or teak etc. half set of campaign drawers that sat on top of its painted pine packing case for use. If desired, turned feet could be screwed into the bottom of the packing case to further lift it. This set of drawers has parted company with its bottom half packing case at some stage. It was not unusual for campaign chest packing cases to be discarded on the return home and presumably somebody didn't realise that the painted case of this Aldershot Chest was an integral part of the piece of furniture.

The half chest is brass bound and the drawers have a cut in cock bead and mahogany linings. The short top right hand drawer has the inset Army & Navy Co-operative Stores Limited label set into its top edge.

Now, without its packing case it makes a very practical coffee table with good storage. It would also work well at the end of a bed. Circa 1880.
