The origin, use of teak, small size, bracket feet and iron handles to the sides are all typical of most of the military chests found of the late 18th / early 19th century period. This chest is raised a little above many others of its type by the reeded moulding cut in around the drawers. The carrying handles to the sides suggest it was never meant to be transported in a case but probably wrapped in a canvas for packing.

Although this type of chest would have mostly been used by Army Officers in India, its small size also suited the Navy and we have previously had one inscribed 'Royal George'. Early 19th century.
