As can be seen the design of this Anglo Indian teak campaign chest stands out.

The board that hides the drawers to the top section during travel has brass fittings to the top corners to fix a pair of legs. This allows the fall to be used as a table when it is dropped on its hinges. Although the table could be used as a desk, the drawers don't have any of the fittings such as pigeon holes or small interior drawers that you associate with a secretaire chest. The legs are turned and reeded which is echoed in the bold feet. The turning and carving are good, with the countersunk handles particularly nice. The colour of the teak is rich and the cast brass corners and strap work, with their steel screws, far superior to those seen on most Anglo Indian Campaign Chests. As the locks and screw fittings to the legs are English, it is possible that is also true of the brass strap work. The metal screw fittings to the legs are marked W & Co. and both have the number 6. The carrying handles to the sides are iron as you would expect and probably Indian.
This is an unusual form of campaign chest. Circa 1840.
