Despatch Box By Houghton & Gunn

A black leather Despatch Box by Houghton & Gunn.
The box is well made with the leather on softwood, as you would expect. The box has a chamfered lip to provide a good seal to the top and is lined in velvet. The interior of the lid has cross ribbons to hold notes. The lid has stay hinges to remain vertical when opened. 'Houghton & Gunn 162 New Bond Street.' is stamped in gilt between the hinges.
The box has a Bramah lock stamped with their name, a crown and the 124 Piccadilly address. The key is missing and likely as a consequence, a brass swing hook and eyelet have been fixed to either side to lock the box. These look to have been added a long time ago. The lid has a leather carrying handle and the initials 'H.S' stamped to the front in gilt. The edges of the box are tooled with a single, blind line.
A good box by a good maker. Late 19th Century.
