ILLUMINATING INDIA - STOW ART WEEK
28 September 2019 - 6 October 2019
An exhibition of East India Company School gouache paintings on mica accompanied by drawings made by the British in India.
The mica paintings show a variety of subjects including Indian trades, types of servants and methods of transport from bullock carts and elephants to palanquins.
The drawings are by a variety of unknown British artists, some amateur and some highly skilled, showing life in India during the 1820's and 1830's. The pictures are both topographical and show members of the social cirlces that the artists moved in such as Sir Charles D'Oyly and Sir Robert Stevenson.
An illustrated talk, entitled Journey To Another World, on the long voyage out to India, the furniture an officer
would take with him and the items that were available to him to describe the
radically different country and culture to his family back home, will take place during the exhibition.
The exhibition is one of numerous events taking part in Stow by 11 galleries for Stow Art Week. More information can be found on Stow Art Week's website below.
