Walnut Coaching Table by Hindley & Sons

A figured Walnut and mahogany Coaching Table by Charles Hindley & Sons.

The tabletop is veneered on mahogany in one piece of figured walnut to each half. As the large sized veneers naturally had faults, there are original oval patches to tidy them up. The two-part top is wider than most and joined to the middle by three hinges and, when set up for use, is locked by a wider than standard twist block. Aside from the veneered top, the table is solid mahogany. The S scroll of the X frame legs have a rounder shape than most, which is pleasing to the eye, and they have the added detail of roundels at the point they cross. This is an unusual addition and a nice touch. The stretchers are also bold in their turnings.

One of the cross bars under the table, that unite the top of the legs and support the top, is stamped C. Hindley & Sons, 134 Oxford Street. 23459. The company was founded in 1820 but this table can be dated to after 1844, when Hindley bought out Miles and Edwards with their premises at 134 Oxford Street. With the acquisition of Miles and Edward, Hindley could offer patrons everything they would need to furnish their house and aimed at the better healed customers. This table certainly fits into those criteria and is several levels above most coaching tables. Charles Hindley & Sons eventually stopped business in 1892. This table is unusual for two reasons, the timber used and a name stamp. We have seen other coaching tables that are made of interesting timber such as rosewood or have a maker's mark but it is certainly unusual with most made of mahogany and no reference to the cabinet maker or seller. The figured walnut to the top elevates the table and makes it very attractive. Circa 1870.
