An oak campaign Refectory Table.

This heavy, large table is the portable version of what is commonly known as a Farmhouse Table. It has thick tapering legs which are hinged to fold as a pair. The legs are joined by a bar to the top and a stretcher towards the foot. They are hinged to fold flat to the underside of the top when not in use. When set up, a substantial hinged bar for each pair of legs holds them into position. The end of each bar has a notch cut out of it, to sit over the stretcher, with a large bolt to the centre to fix it.

When set up the table is solid and can seat 10. It has very little by way of decoration. The 4 plank top has a very simple round, moulded edge and side apron boards are shaped to their ends. These apron boards do have an applied bar running their full length for decoration. They are certainly not needed to add strength. It is possible the table was meant for use in a barrack room or perhaps at a farm to celebrate the harvest.

A good-sized table that would work well in a kitchen. Circa 1900.
