A mahogany Coaching Table.

The coaching table is a common piece of folding furniture and this example has a good leg with a pleasing shape. Although some Army Officer's no took doubt coaching tables with them, most were probably made for domestic use. They are a useful extra table to set up when needed at a party or in the garden and still fill such needs today.

The table folds on its X-frame base with the two piece top folding to close in on itself. For use, the top is held by a locking bar which twists in to position to support the top. There is a minor crack to the wood by one hinge and when closed, it can be seen that the two boards of the top have a slight smile but both are hardly noticeable and don't effect the use of the table. Coaching tables seem to have always been popular and are certainly useful pieces of furniture. Mid 19th century.
