A walnut campaign Card or Tea Table by Ross & Co.

To convert the table from a Side to Card Table the top is turned 90 degrees and can then be 'flipped' to reveal a baized playing surface and double in size. A moulded edge is only cut to one half of the top. This gives it a more natural look when folded as a side table but when opened half of the top has a straight edge and half is moulded.

To dismantle the table it is turned upside down to rest on its top. An iron bolt that is 20 1/4 inches in length is fitted through the turned baluster column to fix it to the underside of the top. This bolt also fixes a shaped iron plate to the end of the column. The plate has four turned over corners that help to lock the four legs into place. The legs each have a pair of screw heads to fix them to the column. The top screw fixes into a pear shaped slot and the bottom to an open slot, being fixed by the plate's turned over corner. The shaped legs stand on castors and have incised carved decoration. The legs are numbered 2, 3, 6 and 8.

The table has an engraved bone plague to the frame, under the top noting 'Ross & Co. Manufacturers, 8, 9, 10 Ellis's Quay, Dublin'. The design is typical of Ross thinking outside of the box to offer a piece of campaign furniture that is different to anything else available for travel yet was fashionable to the day. Circa 1880.
