Campaign Table By Luscombe
Campaign Table By Luscombe
A portable teak Table stamped 'T.P. Luscombe & Co. Allahabad'.
The top of this table is hinged to fold in half, along its length, for travel. When set up, a pair of bracing bars support the underside of the top. The hinged legs are each held in the vertical position by a hinged loper with an extended screw head that locks into a cutout to the legs. They are further held in place by two long iron straps that swing from one leg to its pair to fit over a screw head to be held in place.
The table has a strong build for its size with shaped bars fitted to the underneath of the short sides and two bracing bars where one might be sufficient. The lopers and the iron straps add to the belt and braces approach. When folded a leather belt strap, fixed to the underside of the top, holds the two halves of the top and the four legs tightly together. It is well considered in both its use and its packing.
Thomas Popham Luscombe built a good business in India manufacturing and retailing a wide variety of items that his mostly British customers would need. This ranged from campaign furniture and fishing equipment to hardware and timber.
This table is well made and practical as a centre table although it may have originally been intended for a number of uses from dining to working. Circa 1900.
