A teak, Hatherley Patent B3 Folding Table by Allan Jones.

The more common Hatherley B tables are the smaller B1 and B2. Infact, this is the first, larger B3 that we have had. At the time of manufacture, in teak, it was also their most expensive at 15/6. All their tables were available in deal, birch, oak or teak with the latter costing the most. It was also available with a round or an oval top but not in teak.

The table folds so that it can be stored or set a little wider so that it can be used as an easel or book rest. A bar to support a book etc. folds out and is held in place by a sliding bar. The underside of the top has a pressed brass label stating "Allan Jones & Co., Patentees & Manufacturers, Gloucester" The table is also stamped "Hatherley Patent" to the folding mechanism. Most Hatherley B table are stamped in this manner but the smaller ones don't tend to also have the pressed plaque.

Allan Jones & Co. were a very interesting business and more can be read about them in Makers. The table is a useful size as a working table or easel that can be easily folded up and put away. Circa 1905.
