An aquatint print from Ackerman's Series of National Steeple-Chasers.
The print shows the start of the race with various soldiers and civilians cheering the riders on. A further explanatory subtitle is given: This Steeple Chase took place on a 4 mile Course on the 14th of December, the Horses being the property of Officers of the 1st and 2nd Regiment of Life Guards, the Royal Horse Guards and the 9th Lancers.
The jockeys and horses are named and some also have their colours noted to help identify them. They are, l to r, Mr. Lucas on Merchant, Sir W.W. Wynn on Amazon, Mr De Winter on Nimrod, Lord Drumlanrig on Poacher, Mr. Beauchamp on Mystery, Sir H. H. Bruce on Surprise, Captain Grant on Warwick and Captain Ogilvy on Clearwell. The print notes to the top, either side of the title, that it was Designed By F.C. Turner and Engraved By G.A. Turner. The print has a coloured mount cut to the text and a gilt frame. The military have enjoyed a long tradition of horse racing as this print illustrates. Circa 1845.
