The Passing of Shackleton
6829
As its caption notes this ink and wash drawing was 'Specially drawn by a Daily Mail artist from material supplied by Capt. L. Hussey.
This sketch depicts the scene as the body of the dead Commander of the Quest was reverently transferred from the ship to the motor-boat which conveyed it ashore at Grytviken, the South Georgia whaling station off which Sir Ernest died. It is dated 3/2/22 and so was published just under a month after the great polar hero died. In 1921 Shackleton returned to Antarctica to map the coastline and undertake geological research. He died aged 47 of a suspected heart attack on board his ship, the Quest as she was anchored in King Edward Cove, South Georgia. He was buried on the island and his passing signalled the death of the golden age of Antarctic Polar exploration.
