John Carman

1791 - 1863

John Carman was born in 1791 and started his own business by 1818 with 20 Marylebone Street, London his listed address. In 1824 he moved to number 67 of the recently built Quadrant on Regent Street, designed by Nash for fashionable retailers. By 1826 he had moved premises to 2 Bruton Street off Bond Street and was still listed there in 1863 the year that he died.

His simple label has the Royal Coat of Arms and states 'Bought of J. Carman, Canteen, Military Trunk & Camp Equipage Manufacturer, No. 20. Marylebone Street, Golden Square.' Like most early campaign furniture makers he is entered in the trade directories as a trunkmaker but as his label notes he was also a maker of Camp Equipage. Despite having a long career with a smart address, he is one of the lesser known makers with little of his wares known to come on to the market.
