Antique Chess Box Table

A mahogany Campaign Chess Table that packs down neatly to fit into the upturned top, which folds in half to form a box. The squares are marked out in rosewood and boxwood veneers but the whole top has pleasantly mellowed in colour with age.

To set the table up, the tripod legs are pushed out to their full extent and the hexagonal column is screwed onto the top of the legs to lock them in position. The bottom of the column has a raised ring which fits into a circular groove to the top of the legs. The column has a sprung button which, when depressed, allows the height to extend. To the top of the column is a block which the fully opened box is fitted to. As can be seen, the underside of the top has a cut out to fit the block and a sliding wedge to secure it. The block is beech and possibly a historic replacement.

The table can be used at 2 different heights or of course the box can be used without the base simply as a chess board. The design is clever and an identical example can be seen in Brawer's book British Campaign Furniture. A classic piece of portable furniture. Circa 1830.
