A leather hide case by J. Andrews of Bournemouth.

The case is an unusual, small size but bears many of the qualities that you would hope to see on a much larger case. There is a good, fishtail carrying handle to the top which is stamped 2391. The lid is fixed with a brass hasp lock and two short straps. The bottom section has a chamfered edge to make it easier to close and give a good fit. The interior is lined in linen and the lid has two straps to support the full-length leather hinge. The case has four good brass studs to the underside to raise it off the ground. The name 'A.F.G. Ellis' is neatly painted to the top.

To the inside of the lid is a black oval maker's label noting 'J. Andrews, Trunk, Bag & Portmanteau Manufacturer, 2, Branksome Buildings, Commercial Road, Bournemouth.' Like many provincial trunk makers, Andrews has proved difficult to research. Other than a canvas with leather edging, dome topped trunk we have found no other reference to him. His work was good though and this is a lovely little case. Circa 1900.
