Leather Trunk by Finnigans

Leather Trunk by Finnigans

Maker / Retailer

A smaller than standard leather hide Trunk by Finnigans of Manchester.

The trunk has two rows of brass studs to the top that are fixed to metal strengthening bands to the interior, hidden by the lining. The top is secured by a brass lock and two belt straps stitched to the front and back of the trunk. The straps each have a shaped belt loop to the front and back, all of which are stamped 'Finnigans Maker Manchester. The brass lock is missing its key but retains its cover flap with belt. The interior of the trunk is lined in blue Manchester ticking, often used by the maker.

The whole lid interior is taken up by a waxed linen pocket, edged in red leather and with fastening straps. The trunk sits on pine sledge feet, running from side to side, with short leather bands fixed to the ends. The maker's name and city is also stamped to each side of the lid. A white identifying cross, now worn, has been painted to each side by the original owner.

The leather has a number of marks to it, gained through use, but no more than you would expect and they do not distract from it. Finnigans enjoy a very good reputation for their work and this trunk is also appealing for being smaller in size whilst retaining a good height. It was made either side of 1900.
