Travel Candlesticks by W. Tonks & Son SOLD
A pair of cast brass Brighton Bun Military Candlesticks by W. Tonks & Son.
Given their diameter of 3 1/4 inches to the dishes, this pair of candlesticks have a good weight. We have had two pairs of Brighton Buns by Tonks in the past, one like this set that were fully cast and a set that had pressed brass dishes with cast sconces. The maker's logo of WT&S with a Sun is only stamped to one dish, as was the previous fully cast pair we had.
William Tonks & Son were a Birmingham company founded at the end of the 18th century and who continued into the middle of the 20th century. They grew to be a large and successful business. In the 1860s they had over 10,000 regular patterns which gives an idea of their range and size.
It is unusual to get a maker's mark on brass portable candlesticks and Tonks enjoy a good reputation. Mid to late 19th century.
Size of each for use is given.
