A Silver Plated portable Toast Rack.

The two short sides of the Rack's base are hinges and the dividers are made of two parts riveted together. This allows the Toast Rack to fold quickly, flat packing to reduce its size. The dividers are arch shaped with the rods, used to form them, flattened where they meet to fix the rivet. The middle divider is fitted with a two finger folding handle to the top. The Toast Rack stands on ball feet with a serrated ring to the middle by way of decoration. They are offset to sit alongside each other when folded. One of the feet is stamped with the initial 'G S' which probably refer to the owner rather than a maker.

It's likely that this Rack would have been used on picnics etc. and is a good illustration of the lengths the Victorians went to, to make life as practical as possible. Today of course, it can also be used as a letter rack as well as it primary purpose. Circa 1900.
