A pair of aluminium Long John Binoculars with their original leather shoulder case.

Long Johns were often favoured for use on board ship as they were, essentially, a pair of telescopes. This pair have a magnification of 18 and are engraved '18 times power' as can be seen in the photos. The binoculars have black leather grips in excellent condition. The brown leather case is lined in red velvet and has both an adjustable shoulder belt strap and a fishtail handle to the lid.

To use the binoculars, you first pull the top section away from the grips to extend the barrels. The central tube has a sprung button which will lock the binoculars in position. This needs to be depressed to later reduce the tube length. Once extend, the central wheel will adjust the focus.

One eye piece has the maker's name and address of 'Aitchison & Co. 46 Fenchurch St.' to the blacked part. The company were started as opticians by James Aitchison in 1889. He soon took an interest in binoculars, a natural progression for an optician, and took out 13 patents between 1891 and 1906. The business was very successful and by 1914 they had nine shops in London and one in Leeds. They were also opticians to H.M. Government and fulfilled a number of contracts for binoculars during the Great War. The company bought Dolland in 1927 to become Dolland & Aitchison.

The condition on this pair of Long Jones is very good. The left eye piece is completely clear and the right only a few minor interior dirt marks. The aluminium and the grips are in good condition as is the case, although the belt straps have creases from use. A good pair of binoculars. Their length extends from 6 1/2 inches to nine. Circa 1910.
