Tall Campaign Trunk SOLD

A dark teak, brass bound tall Trunk.

This is an interesting trunk for its unusual proportions and the strength of its build. The thick boards used are close to one inch and the top is held by four brass hinges. Added to this, it has iron corner straps to the lid interior to further strengthen the top and three locks by J.Tann, with the middle one being larger. The top of the trunk has shaped brass corners and the top of the base has standard brass corners. The sides have good, flush carrying handles.

The trunk is fitted with three removable trays that sit on top of each other. They certainly have some age but as to whether they are original or not is difficult to tell. The trays have air vent holes as does the lip of the top. The top also has a shadow mark indicating it might have had a brass edge. The exact purpose of these air holes or if they are original is not known. If not original, they have certainly been there a long time.

This trunk was built for strength which might indicate it was for holding silver but its unusual height makes it practical for modern use as a lamp table or to go behind a sofa etc. The address of 11 Newgate Street on the three J. Tann locks date them to between 1888 and 1912. Late 19th Century in date.
