A steel Peg and Worm Corkscrew.
The Corkscrew's name comes from its components: a peg handle and the helix worm. The small size of Peg and Worm Corkscrews made them ideal for travel. When not in use, the peg pushes into the centre of the worm. Aside from packing away neatly, the peg adds strength to the worm when not in use.
For use, the peg is used as a crossbar handle fitting into a hole to the top of the worm. Although quite simple in design, the Corkscrew is lifted by having a groove to the helix and tramlines to the top of the peg and fixing eye to the worm. Early 19th Century.
