A pair of mahogany Balloon Back Campaign Chairs.

This pair would probably have been part of a larger set with the chisel mark number of VIII suggesting there may have been at least 8. The other chair is marked IIII. Both chairs are marked to the mahogany seat frame and the back legs but not the turned front legs.

The method of dismantling these chairs is similar to those made by Ross. The turned front legs unscrew from the seat and the back legs screw onto bolts that extend from the two uprights of the back and pass through the seat. The difference between this chair and those made by Ross is that the seat consists of a frame with a separate padded seat that sits on top of it. As the back legs are constructed with a square section rather than turned, a thumb bolt through a brass plate is used to fix the leg in the correct position. The thumb bolt is much larger compared to those used by the Dublin campaign furniture makers.

The chair backs have carved decoration and have been built for strength by using thicker timber, which makes them heavier than expected. Circa 1835.
