Georgian Naval Chair
83680
An exceptional mahogany, Georgian Naval Chair.
This example is probably the best that we have had. The arched back is fluted with patera to the top corners and the pierced, vase splat is carved with foliage. The chair decoration is heavily influenced by Robert Adam and Thomas Chippendale, elevating it from most other naval chairs. The hinged seat lifts, as you would expect, to allow the front legs to fold on their hinges against the back legs, quickly reducing the depth for easy storage.
The padded upholstery has been replaced at some stage as has the odd bit of carving here and there but this is to be expected given the chair's probable use on board a naval ship. This is a rare naval chair that stands out from most others. Circa 1770.
