A mahogany Campaign or Military Chest by Edward Johnson, dating to a five year period after 1836.
The chest has interesting flush campaign handles to the drawers, of a type seen more often on boxes. The two halves of the chest locate to each other by two wooden lugs set forward from the middle to the bottom section. The chest has brass corner straps to each top corner of the upper section and brass straps just to the front corners on the rest of the chest. The drawer linings are mahogany and the removable turned feet are on wooden threads but have been later glued in to fix them.
This chest has a paper label to the middle of all 5 drawers. It gives his address of 155 Leadenhall Street which dates to between 1836 and 1843. The label printers, Rowe, Kentish & Co. were active from 1838, narrowing the chest down to a 5 year period. A good chest by a hard to find maker. Circa 1840.
