A brass edged, amboyna Cavalry Box.

This is the first Chinese Export Cavalry Box that we have seen but the design shares the attributes of those made by the English and French. It is hinged on the short side and so does not open the way you might expect. Although the dividers etc have been removed to leave the interior plain, it can be seen that it did have some. These would have separated the razors and other toiletry items the box would have held. The lid interior also has a notch cut out to each side and it is probable that they were used to hold a mirror during travel.

English and French Cavalry Boxes tend to be a little longer and thinner than this one but the inspiration for the design can be seen. The box is well made with ebony veneers to the top and bottom where they meet. Although stripped out, the small size and plain interior makes it a useful box. Early to mid 19th Century.
