Pair of Ross Chairs

Pair of Ross Chairs

Sold

This pair of mahogany chairs by Ross & Co. are very similar to a set in Brawer which have open backs. The green leather upholstery is original and it is remarkable that it has survived. What is also remarkable is that one chair still has its removable linen cover. We have seen another Ross chair upholstered in the same manner with leather covered studs used to fix the seat and back covers and it is known that Ross did their own upholstery.

The front chair legs are turned with the back legs of square section, chamfered to the corners. One chair is marked PL2 and PL3 to the legs whilst the other is stamped PL44 and PL45. This numbering system is fairly typical of Ross. One of the chairs has an ivorine plaque giving the address of '8,9,10 Ellis's Quay'. Circa 1870.
