The contrast of Indian silver straps and corners against the dark ebony wood of this Campaign Box is stunning.
The box has 2 removable trays with dividers made from ebony with mahogany bases and lined in red velvet. The hinges for the top are set to the corners and made as right angled straps with further straps to the opposite corners of the both the top and bottom sections to ensure there is metal on metal when closed. The silver screws to all of the strap work have their heads filed off to give a clean, flat finish.
It is unusual to find a solid ebony box and the use of silver further accentuates the dark colour of the wood. That said, the wood still has variations to the colour, giving it a lovely depth. An exceptionally good looking box. Mid 19th Century.
