Chinese Export Campaign Box

Chinese Export Campaign Box

A brass edged, Asian hardwood Chinese Export Campaign Box. The wood is possibly Hung-Mu but what is certain is that the grain and richness of colour gives it the appearance of a patinated leather. The top has a brass plate engraved James Tonno. The underside of the lid is Chinese elm. Not only does the box have brass edging to all the sides but also to the top and box’s edges where they meet. The drawer has no handle but is pulled out by the key. All 4 sides of the front of the box are also edged in brass. The top section of the box has evidence of once having dividers and the drawer has one divider remaining. Both main compartment and drawer are re-lined in blue velvet. The patina to the wood of this box is striking. Early 19th Century.
