Leather Suitcase by Finnigans

Leather Suitcase by Finnigans

A leather Suitcase by Finnigans of New Bond Street, London. Both the top and bottom halves of the case are fitted with a curtain held by 2 popper buttons to contain the contents when the case is opened. The top section has 2 elasticated belts under the curtain which also has a zipped pocket. Benjamin Finnigan established the company in Manchester and although the exact date of formation is not known, an advert of 1920 noted that they were nearly 100 years sold. The business was run by succeeding generations of the family and had various addresses in Manchester, probably starting at 11 Market Street before progressing to the large shop at 123 Deansgate and another at 115 Market Street. They expanded to Liverpool and by the turn of 1900 opened a shop in New Bond Street, London. Aside from manufacturing good quality luggage, Finnigans also produced silver items and other luxury goods. The trunk has the initials N.H. and the maker’s name stamped in gilt to the leather. Finnigans name is also marked to both locks which retain their key. Circa 1920.
