A fruitwood Portable Lectern that folds down to a bar for travel.
The lectern is made up of 2 wider parts that form the 'case' when packed down and the rest for the book or sheet music to rest on when set up. These 2 parts also have a small pin to 1 side with a corresponding hole to the other to lock them together when folded. They are also united by the central upright which has a cut out to take the lecterns adjustable foot. This can be set to 4 positions. Off the top of this upright, the frame of the lectern folds out in 3 parts to each side. The 2 outside parts to the frame slot into cut outs to the wider rest to hold the frame in place.
These portable lecterns were popular through a large part of the 19th Century. This example folds down to a very compact size of 9 by 1 5/8 by 1 1/4 inches. Mid to late 19th Century.
