A red leather on softwood Georgian Scroll Box.
This box is profusely decorated with tooled lines of leaves around each edge along with diagonal lines and the GR cipher below a crown. Even the base of the is tooled. There is also the remains of sealing wax in three places to the top. The box has two swing hooks and a lock with oval brass escutcheon plate. The key is missing. The interior is lined in paper with a light blue wash.
This box would have originally held a scroll for a Royal investiture, award or knighthood. The leather has developed a good deep red colour and the tooling to the underside is certainly unusual. There is no evidence as to who the box belonged to. Early 19th Century.
