Bandsman's Sheet Music Strap

£165.00

Category: Other Travel Items

Subcategory: Miscellaneous

Made by Hawkes & Son, the leather belt strap of this brass sheet music holder fits to the wrist to allow the bandsman to use both hands for his instrument. The sprung brass clip is of a classical lyre shape and fixed to the leather belt by six rivets. The maker's name is stamped to the brass. It is presumed that they were a London company and although there were two Hawkes & Sons in London around the 1900 period it is probable that it was Hawkes & Son of Denman Street, Golden Square, who are listed in the 1899 London Directory under Musical Instrument Makers. They are also believed to have published the 'Complete Catalogue of Orchestral Music' in 1930. There are three lines of writing to the inside of the strap but they are illegible. Circa 1900.
