A folding pine Saddle Rack by the Army & Navy CSL.
This low Saddle Rack folds easily for transport with the 2 pairs of legs locked into place by a sprung ash bar. When the bar is lifted at each end, the pair of legs are hinged to fold underneath them. It would have been a useful piece of equipment for a cavalry officer.
We have had a similar saddle rack by the A&N CSL a number of years ago and it was also stamped with the number 16703 along with U 2 and the maker's name. This example doesn't hav a long number but is marked A&N CSL Makers with P 3. The Army and Navy were prolific makers of campaign furniture and more can be ready about them in our Makers section. One leg has split at some stage and has an old, honest repair. The screws used in the repair are evident in the final image. Circa 1900.
