A folding walnut Armchair or Deck Chair.
This design of chair was very popular either side of 1900 and was likely to have been made a number of different manufactures and in a few different woods. It was used both domestically and by those travelling. Two versions were made: one with a straight back and this version with a shaped back to give lumber support for added comfort.
The chair can be reclined to 7 different positions by fixing the brass collar to the back of the arms to a variety of metal lugs set into the back frame. The first photo shows the chair in its most upright position but it can also be set to an almost horizontal position with 5 further positions in between. Late 19th Century.
